Lewis White: No. No, when I got there, we, uh, we stayed in the same studio. Upstairs, the second floor. This was August of 58'. The staff then as I said was Alma, Trumon, Jesse Champion, Willie McKinstry, Lewis White, and I believe maybe Johnny Jive, I don't remember that, at that time. But the answer to your question is no, we had the same studio. B: Mhmm. Johnny Jive came in around 60'. L: Okay, well that's about right then. B: Yeah. L: Yeah. B: So, Jesse, yourself, Alma, Willy, Truman, and Truman Puckett. L: Uh huh. And a host of Sunday morning who were kind of regulars in a sense. B: Uh huh, like...was there a guy named, um, Wills? L: Mickey Wills. Mickey Wills was a regular announcer, I never met Mick. When I got there in 58', Mickey had left. The only thing I remember about him was he had a reputation among the management of being a thorough going kind of fellow. And there were people out in the community who liked him. He did do a Madame Lamar commercial, that's the reason I remember him so vividly. B: What's a Madame Lamar commercial? L: Madame Lamar was one of the psychics on the Bessemer super highway. You mean, we don't have those people anymore? Well, he had a commercial, Madame Lamar, so long after he left that place, see, they'd play it once or twice a day, and then she bought two spots a day. So for years, until at least the 60s, we would play Mickey Wills' Madame Lamar. That's how I knew him. B: Right. L: But he was considered an up and comer. Uh, not with as much potential as Roy Wood, but, when I got there, you know, he's gospel. At least the management thought he was something special. B: Actually, in one of Rick's tapes, there's a show of his - yeah - and he's got this kid on the phone who's going, "Hello, Radio?", "Hello, Radio?" and people, and you don't hear the person talking on the radio, you don't hear the person. But, uh, it was striking, apparently he had some high school kids in. L: He was an immensely popular man, .it might have been good for JLD radio in the long run, I don't know how long he stayed there. ..Jim Connely would tell me.what a marvelous man Mickey Wills was. Mar 16, 2017), a broadcaster with WJLD from 1958 to 1972, His show was a weekender characterized as a jazz show later on in his career; however, the BBRM has one of his shows from the early 1960’s that is a total mix. Later, White became a public relations person for Mayor Richard Arrington of Birmingham, left Birmingham in the 1990’s for New Orleans radio, and returned to Birmingham around 2000. Bob interviewed him while Lewis lived in New Orleans. He passed in 2016. Eddie Castleberry: Ah, JLD I came to in 1953, uh, or ’54. In 1954, when, when JLD was up on a mountain. GR: Yeah. EC: And you had to go way up on the mountain. And I was up there with a bunch of people like, uh, Roberta Roland and King Porter and, um, Willie McKinstry, who is my good friend. GR: Oh, right. You remember Gatemouth Moore. EC: Yes, I worked with Gatemouth. We were on EDR together. And, uh, I saw Gatemouth the last time I was here. Last time I was in Birmingham. GR: What was he like, as a… EC: Oh, he was a personality. He used to preach sermons like, uh, the baseball ...uh the baseball suit, and he’d be in the pulpit with a baseball suit on, and he’d preach he’d say “the baseball game of life” and he’d have a catcher’s mit and a ball. [Both chuckle] GR: So he was a showman? EC: Yeah, a real showman. And he also, before he became a minister he was a famous blues singer. GR: Ok. EC: And I got his record at home now, “I Ain’t Mad at You, Pretty Baby.” It was a big thing. GR: Wow, that’s funny. We had him on a few months back, and he was quite a character. EC: Yeah, I know. GR: When did you start workin for the, uh, the network, the major network? EC: Oh, that was, that was something else. Like, like all, most things that I’ve gotten in radio, that was a lucky break. I was doing a, I was workin in Washington, DC, and I was doing a program, midnight to 6, in Washington. And some guy called me and said “Hey man, I heard you on the air, and you sound pretty good. Did you know that they’re starting a black news network?” I said “Really?” And I had a background in news. Because during that time all black disc jockeys had to do news and play records. GR: Ok. EC: And, you know, they had to have a news background. I had a news background, so I went over and I got the job. All of a sudden I’m on 350 radio stations. He said he got there around the fall of ’49, and he left in 1950, in September of 1950. EC: Who, Paul? BF: Paul, yeah. EC: I could’ve swore he was there, no he was there in ’50 cuz I didn’t come there til 1950, and he came after I did. BF: Ok. EC: Alright. BF: Ok, so I guess he didn’t stay that long. EC: No, he didn’t. He was commuting from Atlanta. BF: When you were at, uh…oh, goodness, really!? EC: Yeah, everyday, he was drivin…he was drivin from Atlanta to Birmingham and back. BF: Amazing. And Walter…so while you were there, you saw a number of people join the staff. EC: Yeah. BF: You saw Walter Anglin join. EC: Walter Anglin. And a fella named Branch. Branch was there. And uh, Barron Burns. BF: Now, Branch, is that a first name or a last name? EC: That’s his last name. BF: Oh, you don’t know… EC: His name was William Branch…I think, I think. It was William. I know his name was Branch, his last name was Branch. BF: And who else? EC: And um, um…lemme see, who I can’t think of? Uh, Barron Burns. BF and EC alternate between correct spelling of Barron Burns. BF: Oh, Barron Burns. EC: Yeah, he was there. He came there. And also Jimmy Story. BF: Jimmy Story? EC: Yeah. BF: Jimmy Story, what a name! EC: Jimmy Story, he was there, for a while. Gatemouth: The drum fell off, the drum it broke up the show and I didn’t whether to cry quit or what ,and I was going to quit the show I was embarrassed, It was the most em... so the gentleman that owned the theater I’ll never forget his name, he said to me, Mr Moore Mr. Moore think about that now in the ‘30s, what do you make a week I said I make $9 dollars a week. I quit... and I got room and board what do you make nine... he said I’ll tell you what I’ll do How’d you like to have to $25. $25 dollars for what He said let me use that name that lady, not the back part of what she said, the first part and I’ll give you $25 just to let me advertise Gatemouth is in town. The next day I’m in my hotel down on Auburn street and here comes a cowbell and a mule with a hat on and a great big sign with a mouth so you know, an old wagon, Gatemouth at the 81. May 19, 2004) one of the most daring of the radio announcers of the 1950’s, Moore was a blues singer in the 1930’s and 40’s and a gospel singer, minister and radio announcer in the 50’s, in Birmingham. His accomplishments can best be appreciated by listening to both interviews in the BBRM archive. In this interview, he is joined later on by another giant of Birmingham broadcasting, Roy Wood. That’s not to say there wasn’t a great need for mobilization in cities like Charlotte, but there were very few major confrontations or conflagrations there in the 60s, not until you get really into the bussing crisis of the early 1970s. I wondered if radio in those places, actually had sort of a mollifying effect that actually kept things cooler. I found two very interesting stations: one, WBT, which was a major 50,000 watt station, that was heavily white-oriented but always included a certain amount of black-oriented programming; and another station, WGIV, which I sort of fell in love with, really, I thought this was a terrific station. I went by a white southerner from South Carolina called Francis Fitzgerald, who somewhere along the way line ahead of the game on the civil rights issues and began to encourage more and more overt promotion of voter registration drives, he was somewhat more willing to entertain the idea of black protests on the streets if the city government didn’t actually comply with desegregation ordinances and laws. But, you know, this guy was in a way a sort of a model of a progressive white southerner working with an overwhelmingly black staff, with DJs like “Chattie Hattie” Leeper and “Genial Gene” Potts to actually try to use the radio to encourage what was in a way a sort of nonviolent movement, and really had a good deal of success in achieving desegregation in Charlotte, in a relatively orderly manner. Was there a web that was developing? We would go, little boys, knee pants and barefooted most of the time, BF: That’s how you would dress when you sang? NW: Yeah. Economics was kind of bad back then. But they let us sing, and eventually we got pretty good, we just you know...drifted… BF: And you graduated into the seniors? NW: No, no BF: What happened after that? Wooding Jr., 2007 Oral History Description An account of the resource Norman Bennett “NB” Wooding, Jr. (b. Nov. 28, 1923, d. Oct. 31, 2015), Interviewed at his home in Mason City, Birmingham by Bob Friedman. In 2012, NB Wooding, Jr. celebrated 80 years singing gospel quartet in Jefferson County and over 60 years involved in gospel broadcasting. His life also spanned a stint working with Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. A father of seven, NB retired as President of the Pillars of Birmingham gospel quartet. Bob Friedman: Do you remember what it was? HB: I can’t remember now what it was. BF: You were a little kid? HB: Yeah BF: Was your voice deep or was your voice high back then? HB: It was deep, he was my idol. My voice was deep. BF: Was William Blevins’s voice deep? HB: Yeah. He had a deep and high voice. BF: He had a wide range? HB: Yeah, he had a wide range. And I experienced, wanted from singer solo to quartet. I learned how to modulate, you know higher pitch. As I got older and more experienced. I went to lead to tenor to fifth. Even to six. That’s what they call it now… BF: Now the first time you sang with Blevins you say was at WJLD and it was in Bessemer City Hall and it was in 1946. HB: Bessemer City Hall. BF: Do you remember meeting anybody, you were a little kid then, well you were 14. Do you remember anybody from the station beside Mr. Blevins? In other words, you probably went there on a Sunday. HB: I went there on a Sunday morning just to sing, sing that one song. After that I never did get a chance to go back till I start to singin’ quartets. BF: What was the first quartet you sang in? HB: The first quartet that I sung with was the Four Stars of Harmony. BF: Remember what year that was? HB: That should have been in…50… bout 1949 I believe it was, something like that. We went to Columbus, Mississippi, ya know our big bass singer was singing about “Tell Heaven I’m Coming Home” Shoot! a white fellow was way in the back there and I’m gonna tell you what he said to him, between me and you…. He told me “Sing it again!” And he put a 50-dollar bill in the hat just for me to sing that one good...and Sanders sung it again. But we had some rough times through that Bob. Was coming out of Georgia and we stopped at a store to get something to eat, and it was a store full of Klu Klux. Sitting around chewing tobacco…Some of them had axe handles in their lap. Said, “Y’all a singing group?” “Yes sir, we just stopped by to buy us some cheese and crackers and things like that.” He said, “Well boys y’all gone have to sing.” So we said, “We don’t mind singing.” “Got to sing before you leave, if not we’re gonna keep yall down heah.” And they told, named the songs that they wanted us to sing. So he told us, he said I want you, after I told them I didn’t sing, said, “I want you to sing ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ “after that I want you to sing, “Everyone’s Gonna Have a Lesson in Glory” just like the Blackwood Brothers.
